• First Congregational United Church of Christ
In 1992, First Congregational UCC became one of Madison’s 1st faith communities to adopt a formal statement welcoming and affirming ALL people, regardless of sexual orientation:

“As a community of God’s children, we, the members of First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, acknowledge our shortcomings and our need to reach out to all who wish to affirm their faith with us in this community of faith and to worship with us as members of this congregation. We acknowledge that the church has often judged and excluded from the community of faith gay, lesbian, and bisexual persons or has been complicit by its silence. We confess the presence of ignorance, fear, and hatred in ourselves, in the church, and in our society and we ask the grace of God to overcome them. We invite and welcome all persons without regard to sexual orientation to join us in our journey of life and faith, and to seek covenant to be responsible to God and to one another.”

LGBT people serve in lay leadership positions and on staff. Children of same-gender couples have been baptized into our community of faith. Our church pastors have officiated at same-gender union ceremonies, in our sanctuary and other locations. Straight individuals and couples, including some with small children, have joined First Congregational UCC because of its “Open and Affirming” (ONA) policy and practices.

The LGBTQ Community and Allies are committed to the “affirming” part of the ONA. In the past the group has met in members’ homes for meals/discussion, participated in PRIDE marches, AIDS Walk Wisconsin, and traveled to the NAMES Quilt display. In 2016, our church was honored to host several panels from the NAMES Quilt. For several years a cycling team, “Team Comma,” has participated in a ride to raise funds for local AIDS organizations. Each year the congregation celebrates being an Open and Affirming congregation on the second Sunday in October.

Upcoming activities are announced in the weekly “Tower” newsletter, in regular Sunday bulletins, on our web site, and our Facebook page.

• Freedom From Religion
The history of Western civilization shows us that most social and moral progress has been brought about by persons free from religion. In modern times the first to speak out for prison reform, for humane treatment of the mentally ill, for abolition of capital punishment, for women’s right to vote, for death with dignity for the terminally ill, and for the right to choose contraception, sterilization and abortion have been freethinkers, just as they were the first to call for an end to slavery. The Foundation works as an umbrella for those who are free from religion and are committed to the cherished principle of separation of state and church.
